Director, Public Affairs

Job Summary  (Primary function)
The Director, Public Affairs, U.S. manages key external brand and corporate communications initiatives, as well as leads advocacy relations for certain therapeutic areas. 


Essential Functions of the Job  (Key responsibilities)

  • Support/drive U.S. communication strategies and programs for marketed brands and future indications that help meet business objectives.
  • Support the development and implementation of U.S. communication strategies and programs that strengthen brand and company reputation.
  • Work closely with U.S. commercial, advocacy and market access teams to address corporate/brand opportunities and challenges.
  • Develop and manage the review process for U.S. press releases and other materials (e.g., fact sheets, videos, Web and social content, etc.).
  • Support corporate strategic messages and enhance awareness/acceptance of brand, corporate and pipeline communications platforms among U.S. general, trade and on-line media, as well as external stakeholders (i.e., physicians, patients, caregivers, payors, advocates), as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance and develop proactive issues-management strategies, as needed, to protect the company and brand reputation.
  • Lead U.S. internal communications and collaborate with global internal communications to assure consistency of messaging and pull-through of corporate initiatives.
  • Develop and implement strategies to partner effectively with patient advocacy groups in therapeutic areas important to the U.S. business, including but not limited to disease awareness and education and policy issues.


Qualifications (Minimal acceptable level of education, work experience, and competency)

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of communications experience in pharma/biopharma on either the agency or corporate side.
  • Experience in both corporate and product public relations and issues management.
  • Established media relationships.
  • Experience in working across multiple departments in a global company.
  • Strong writing skills; sufficient science background to write press releases and other materials describing the Company’s work.
  • Familiarity with issues/sensitivities of corporate reputation management.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • High degrees of self-motivation and organization.
  • Experience managing agency team and adhering to budgets.
  • Ability to work independently, jump into a fast-moving environment and absorb information quickly.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and integrity, and the ability to build relationships and establish credibility at all levels.
